We bought the goslings last weekend from a farm in Church Hill. I did some research and we all loaded up and headed to Tractor supply to get what we needed for the brooding box.... heat lamp, bedding, food and water.
Pretty simple right?
So we've learned a few things ...
1. Goslings poop ... alot! One of those common sense things that you just don't think about until you are trying to keep two goslings in a toilet box. I also need to mention here that to two small boys the amount and frequency of poop is pretty cool.
2. They are messy. So I've established that they poop ... alot. They also like to trample their food bowl and splash water EVERYWHERE. Obviously they like water, but who knew they need to stick their entire head into a bowl of water to blow out their nostrils?
3. They grow overnight. It's amazing how fast these critters grow. They have already out grown their toilet box and have moved on to a corner in Gammie's laundry room. We have also noticed they are flapping their wings more and pecking much harder.
4. They chirp. It's not annoying but I guess it could be if you had more than two.... it's actually kind of cute! It's also interesting that they will communicate like this for at least a year and up to two years.
5. They are hilarious and are a constant source of laughter!
With all of the pooping, splashing, (friendly) biting, chirping and wing flapping are we happy with our first purchase? Absolutely! It's turned out to be more work than we expected (for Gammie), but well worth it.
These are some pics of Fred and Wilma at 17 days. The last picture is of the farm's guard dog ... Henry the Goose. Henry came with the farm and has the personality one would expect from a spoiled goose.
